1957 Omega Seamaster Cal.500 Automatic, 14ct, Two-Tone, All Original
SOLD
The Dial
This all-original Omega Seamaster Automatic has a two-tone metallic dial in ivory cream and silver grey. Yellow gilt arrowhead indices mark the hours and the original dauphine hands, which have aged beautifully, show this watch’s firm, 1950’s design roots.
The dial is signed and badged ‘Omega’ in gilt, with ‘Automatic’ and ‘Seamaster’ below in black pained lettering. ‘Swiss’ is also written just below 6.
The Case
This 14ct solid gold case measures 34mm in diameter, has a smooth flat bezel and strong, swept-back lugs. The top and sides of the case are smooth and have been delicately polished to its current, gleaming condition. The edges remain sharp and defined, although there is a noticeable scratch on the bottom left lug, and the threads in the case-back are a pleasure to use. The crown is a factory original, so it is solid gold and signed by Omega. Although this watch was initially specified as waterproof, this has not been tested and therefore is not guaranteed.
These 34mm Seamasters have quite the cult following, and we certainly expect their interest in this watch. This case design was recently reproduced by Omega (who massively respect their customers and their passion for all Omega watches) for the Omega Seamaster 1948. It is part of their ‘Heritage’ series and is modelled on the first edition Omega Seamaster, released in 1948. The watch has an almost identical case to the one you see here, only larger with modern specs. Currently the Seamaster is one of Omegas longest standing models and has a truly impressive history of development and excellence since its first release.
The screw-down case-back’s exterior is inscribed with ‘14K Gold’, the interior, with the ‘Omega Watch Co’ triangle, the model reference number GX6546, the case serial number D70643 as well as 14ct gold hallmarks.
The Movement
This watch runs on the Omega Cal.500, a 17 jewel, sweep seconds, full rotor automatic movement produced in the late 50’s. Omega’s 500 series is one of the most infamous families of mechanical watch calibres in history, knows for always being ahead of the curve in innovation, features and production, and ticking inside the first editions of some very luxurious models. Although this is the least equipped of the series, it rightly commands the respect of anyone in the know, as part of the series that gave us the Constellation Pie-Pan Deluxe (Gerald Genta, 1953) and had Rolex scratching panicking for half a decade.
This movement has been assessed and cleared by our watchmaker with no work required. The movement performs superbly while being worn, running well within 10 seconds per day. The rotor keeps the spring wound throughout the day and gives no cause for concern performance wise (these can be very expensive to fix so check before you buy).
The rotor is signed ‘Omega Watch Co Swiss’, ‘17 Jewels’, ‘Adjusted Two (2) Positions’. The movement’s serial number 15698710 dates the watch to 1957, and the calibre number 500 is inscribed below the rotor.
Strap & Buckle
This watch is fitted with its original black velvet strap and buckle, which is very rarely seen with watches this old. With use, a strap will deteriorate and inevitably the buckles get lost with them. Clearly this watch has hardly been worn and so the original strap and buckle remain in excellent condition and more than capable of everyday use.
Conclusion
The watch is sold as-is. The watch will take a next day tracked and insured delivery service for the UK, and a 3-5 day service for customers abroad.
