The Dial
A simple silver-white dial furnished with yellow gilt indices and dauphine hands is about as 50’s as it gets and on the 1959 Seamaster, it’s about as good as it gets. Although adhering to the classic aesthetic, there are some noteworthy aesthetic touches. This set of dauphine hands is decorated with black painted inlays, which elevate this expertly restored dial to a rung above the rest of the 1950’s Seamasters. Arabic numerals and ‘pencil’ indices, all in yellow gilt, mark the hours. They have been sympathetically polished to extraordinary affect, now reflecting in a gold as warm as the 18ct case itself.
The Case
This Swiss-made Omega case is a pleasure to behold. The lugs are swept back and slightly rounded to fit the curved bezel. The 18ct gold watch case measures 33.5mm, excluding the original Omega signed crown. The screw-down case-back has no significant scratches or damage to report, and the profile of the case is still very smooth and precise.
In 18ct yellow gold, this is certainly a luxury vintage Seamaster. A usual concern, with cases of a softer gold, is of course the condition. This watch case is in superb condition with no scratches, dings or other marks visible to the naked eye, further increasing its rarity and value.
The rubber seals on this watch have not been tested and so are not guaranteed.
The inside of the case-back carries Swiss 18ct gold hallmarks, along with the Omega model reference number 14700 S.C. Also stamped in the case-back is the Omega branding, indicating the case was made by Omega in Switzerland.
The Movement
Inside the case is the original Omega Swiss-made 5-Series 24 Jewel full rotor automatic movement. The Omega Cal.552 is an excellent early example of the calibre 500 range by Omega, some of the most recognisable vintage Omega movements in existence. In the mid-20th century Omega really were at the top of their game, with firm capital in the mechanical watch market. As manufacturing technology developed so quickly, the possibilities for consumer wristwatches grew with it. Omega capitalised on every opportunity, with their patents and discoveries being superbly displayed in their time-timepieces. To own a vintage 5-Series Omega movement, really is to own an irreplaceable piece of history that shaped todays luxury watch market.
This movement is signed “Omega Watch Co Swiss” along with the calibre number 552 and the movement serial number 17220409, dating this watch to 1959.
Strap & Buckle
This watch is fitted with a dark brown leather strap and matching yellow gold-plated buckle. If a different strap would be preferred, I can fit a 18mm strap provided by the buyer at no extra expense.
Conclusion
The watch is sold as is. I'm a private seller so unfortunately returns aren't an option, unless of course the watch is broken when it arrives. The watch will take a next day tracked and insured delivery service for the UK, and a 3-5 day service for customers abroad.
